New Motorcycle Study Reveals Startling Results

A new Brown University study reveals that individuals ages sixty and older hold the highest increase in percentage of people injured in American motorcycle crashes. Similarly, these older individuals are also more likely to sustain serious injuries in the crashes. According to researchers studying trends in emergency department records within the last decade, older adults involved in motorcycle crashes almost always sustain enough injuries to require hospitalization.

According to the study, between 2000 and 2008, around 1.5 million motorcycle accident injuries involved individuals ages 20 and older.  Around 900,000 injuries, however, were among cyclists who ranged from 20 to 39 years old, compared to around 500,000 injuries in the 40-59 age range.  Most startling, a rising proportion of injuries (close to 70,000 injuries) were incurred by individuals aged 60 and older.

During this time injury rates increased for every age group, but the group who saw the highest incline were the people ages 60+. The number of these individuals who were injured in motorcycle crashes rose almost 300 %.  Similarly, older motorcycle drivers were more likely to be hospitalized for injuries ranging from strains to dislocations. While these injuries were common to nearly every age group, the older individuals were found more likely to experience brain injuries and injuries to their internal organs, than were younger motorcycle drivers.

These startling facts reveal that we are seeing a significant shift in age group activity. The percent of older (ages 60+) motorcycle riders in 2000 significantly increased to what it is today. This reveals that a new focus needs to be placed on the prevention and risk of motorcycle injury for older age groups.
