Firework Safety

With Fourth of July weekend upon us, it is important to review firework safety.  The National Fire Protection Association reports that far more fires are reported on Independence Day than all other days and fire works account for this increase.  Similarly, far more burns are reported on Independence Day than other days as well.  While public firework shows are the safest way to enjoy fireworks this weekend, some safety guidelines should be followed if you decide to handle fireworks yourself.

Precautions and tips

  • Use common sense when handling fireworks
  • Obey firework laws
  • Store fireworks in a cool and dry place
  • Avoid shooting fireworks off near animals or pets
  • Never allow children to handle or use fireworks
  • Wear tight clothing, covered shoes, and pull hair back
  • Only light one firework at a time
  • Never place fireworks in pockets
  • Never re-light “dud” fireworks
  • Do not handle fireworks while under the influence of alcohol
  • Use fireworks in a hard, flat surface with plenty of clear space
  • Always have a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and bucket of water on hand
  • Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water
  • Only purchase fireworks from licensed vendors
  • Read all instructions and labels before handling fireworks

While many precautions can be followed in attempts to be safe while handling fireworks, defective fireworks or negligent handlers can cause burns, injuries, fires and scarring.  Contact a burn lawyer today if you have been burnt or injured by a defective firework or due to the negligence of a firework handler.  Contact experienced premises liability lawyer, Chris Dixon today 314.409.7060.
